I regularly create free reports to use as lead generators and to promote affiliate programs in various niches. This is an excellent way to do affiliate marketing. The system I use is fairly straightforward:

  • Uncover a profitable niche market with high paying affiliate offers. (Clickbank is a great place to start.)
  • Write a short report PDF that answers common question(s) in the niche.
  • Create a squeeze page or website where you give away the report for free in return for name and email address.
  • Promote related affiliate programs in the free report and through an email series via auto-responder.

Once these systems are set up and running, they pretty much generate income on auto-pilot. (Assuming you’ve done SEO for natural targeted traffic or have a PPC campaign rolling.)

I’ve created these systems in many markets - video games, finance, marketing and so on for both myself and my clients and customers. Previously, I’ve always been happy with the results.

Recently though, I came across a hot selling product at Clickbank in the health market that caught my attention. http://TopSecretFatLossSecret.com

(Warning - Might not be work safe - especially if you’ve just had lunch.)

Basically, it’s a “cleansing” diet. You know, get healthy and skinny by removing EVERYTHING from your bowels - especially parasites that are preventing you from digesting your food correctly.

The commission was high, as was its popularity. Also, my keyword research revealed there was plenty of targeted traffic to go after in the niche - so I thought I might put together one of my free report systems to promote it.

Everything was going along well - got my keywords, got my report written, and I sent off some ideas to my graphics guy for the report cover.

When he got the graphic for my free report back to me, it was perfect - exactly has I described it. (Including a spelling error - my fault.) BUT, as I thought about the title I selected and the “look” I was going for, I started to have second thoughts.

Now I’m thinking that this free report may have been my worst affiliate marketing idea yet.

A Week With Kevin Riley - Internet Marketing Lessons Learned

I just got back from Osaka, Japan where I spent the week with Kevin Riley. I had to share a bit of my adventure with you.

Here’s an understatement: The experience was intense. (I’m back home on the Boso Peninsula now, still recovering.)

Except for the few brief hours of sleep I grabbed each night at a nearby hotel, the whole time I was in Osaka I ate, drank, slept and breathed Kevin Riley.

The man is a machine.

Many of you have a good idea of what a great guy he is from his presence at the Warrior Forum, and from the info-products he has relased - but sitting and working right next to him in his home office gave me a whole new perspective, and and even deeper appreciation for this character.

You know, I’ve been doing this “online thing” for years now, yet I still learned a ton from him during our time together including the following:

Kevin Riley's OfficeMultitasking - Riley Style:

In his home office he’s got two computers (one with dual large screen monitors) and a laptop running at the same time. All of them are performing at least one function related to one of the several projects he has in development at any given moment.

I worked next to him in awe as he created and launched a new product including writing the product, writing the salespage, creating the salespage and graphics - while at the same time networking with collaborators on at least two other projects via email, skype and twitter.

At the same time, he was taking down ideas for more projects in the future, answering customer emails and making posts in the forums he is active in.

Keep in mind, he was doing all this AND putting a project together with me - which included many many hours of videotaping and editing on top of all the above. He goes on like this from morning to night - non-stop. I was witness to it for several days in a row. It was exciting to be a part of this insane daily routine - if not somewhat frightening.

Lesson Learned: If you can multi-task like Riley, you can almost guarantee your success.

The Riley Attitude: I’ve met a lot of great people during my years in IM and Kevin is a prime example. As you already know, he comes across as friendly and sincere online. After spending this past week with him in person, I can comfortably tell you that it’s no put-on.

In person, he’s about the most laid back dude I’ve ever met. I’ve never known anyone who can be so relaxed while they are working so hard! He truly appears to enjoy what he does - creating new products, learning new stuff, sharing his knowledge - you can tell he really gets a kick out of helping others learn.

Oh yeah, and when he’s done working - he’s done working. The man knows how to “call it a day”. Not only does he work hard - he plays hard too. He and his lovely wife treated me to some amazing Osaka nightlife and cuisine after hours - the perfect way to unwind.

Lesson Learned: If you do what you truly enjoy, your enthusiasm will become contagious.

The Riley Marketing Method
: For me, this was probably the most educational part of the entire week. I got to see Kevin’s entire marketing machine - from his side of the computer screen. (Little did he know I was taking a ton of notes about it to use for myself!)

From what I saw, the main “component” in his machine is his loyalty and his dedication to his customers. From the time and effort he puts into making his products as informative in content and professional in appearance as possible, to the fact that he personally handles all customer questions - it’s no wonder he has gotten such a good name for himself in such a short period of time.

Lesson Learned: Well, I’m not sharing “everything” I learned about his marketing system - he may want to share some of that himself someday. But I can say this, anyone can instantly increase the value of their businesses by modeling their customer service after the way Kevin does things!

Anyway, I hope this all doesn’t sound too “kiss-assy”. I know many others have learned a lot from Kevin’s products and I thought hearing about my time spent with him in person might add a little more insight into the “mind of Riley”. It’s always good to find a person who is the real deal - no B.S., down to earth - yet still successful in this business.

I’m looking forward to spending a few more days with him again at our little meetup in Bali in June - those of you who are meeting him in person for the first time are in for a treat.
